Her paws lightly hit the rocks as she made her way down towards the stream. Her cream and black fur looked slightly darker than normal, account of her hiding in the shade. The sun was one of her weakness's. She couldn't stand the brightness, it always made her strain to see, and being partially blind, it always seem to hurt more. She dug her nose into the ground, trying hard to pick up a scent, but again, her nose was injured from when she was a pup.
The chihuahua sighed a little, remembering all the memories of her and her owner. She rested near the stream, dipping her paw into the water, feeling the coolness of it run through her fur. A soft smile rested on her muzzle, her ears folding over and her tail curled around her hind legs as she relaxed, listening to the water move slowly. "I wonder what she'd be doing if she were here right now..." She mumbled out loud to herself, more for her sake to pretend someone was near her, instead of being alone.
She had almost fallen into a soft slumber, when she heard a faint noise that startled her. Her ears stood erect as she lifted her head up to look around. She couldn't see anything near, but she knew it wasn't her imagination. Debating whether to say anything or not, she hesitated before calling out, "Who's there?"

Schatzie68 by DesertRat2012, on Flickr ONLY Only had been out for a walk when she stumbled across the scent of another dog, and she stopped. She had not come to the glen too often, staying mostly to the city streets, but the large black and white wolf dog liked a change of scenery on occasion. And here she was out exploring, when she snapped a twig and heard a little voice ask who was there. She inwardly scolded herself for letting her presence be known so easily. She stood quietly and let the sunlight beat down on her. It felt comforting. She listened to the sound of a stream and noted that the voice had come from the same direction. Not sure who she was about to encounter, she puffed her chest up, and stepped around a tree trunk. Laying by the running water was the smallest, cutest little fluffy dog she had ever seen in her life. She could not help a smile cross her muzzle. But just as quickly as it appeared, it vanished. Someone could be using this adorable little creature as a decoy. She started to scan the area around them. “Just me,” she said. “Out for a walk. Enjoying the day.” She did not want to seem rude, but she could not be too cautious. “It appears you are doing the same.”

Cookie looked up, to see a black and white wolf dog in front of her. She gasped lightly, taken in by the size then relaxed quickly after. She was always surprised at first sight of a bigger dog, but she had been raised around them, so it always quickly faded. She yapped a little, upon hearing her talk.
"It is a nice day. But I prefer the shade. Where were you headed too?" She asked, her head moving from side to side to view the area around her. She didn't see any exits, just trees with leaves falling off and flowers almost ready to bud. "A walk? I guess. I like to come here from time to time whenever I need to just get away and think. Plus it has a stream so whenever I'm thirsty, I can just drink from it. Not many dogs know about this place. How did you come to find it?" She asked, curious as to who this wolf dog was and where she had come from. It wasn't everyday she saw a wolf, or at least partially wolf.

Schatzie68 by DesertRat2012, on Flickr ONLY A quick glance around told her no one else was around. And the way the little dogs eyes darted around, it was obvious she was looking for a quick escape if the need arouse. She pushed the idea of this cute little thing being a decoy from her mind. With a smile, Only laid down, so that she did not tower over the small dog. She was trying to make herself closer to her height. “Not headed anywhere in particular,” she replied. “Just out for a stroll. Enjoying the day.”What the little dog said about finding this place, she cocked her head to the side. “I just stumbled on this place, I suppose.” She glanced around, and could appreciate the peacefulness of it. “Is this your place?” She considered moving along without waiting for an answer, but that would have been rude. Besides, there was something fascinating about this little dog. Taking a final glance around, the wolf dog allowed herself to relax a little. She rested her chin on her front paws. She hoped that such a relaxed stance on her part would help calm the little thing down some. She sure did like to talk. “My name’s Only, by the way. Who are you?”

Cookie stared at Only then nodded, listening to her voice. "Today is nice." Cookie's lips curled up slightly, revealing a small smile as she watched the wolf dog lay down nearby. She positioned her front paws on a rock and pushed herself up into a sitting position, roughly the same height as the wolf dog laying down. She laughed a little, shaking her head.
"Weird that someone would just stumble, but I guess I did that too. It isn't my place, no. I just come from time to time to feel calm. I don't think it's really anyone's place. Like I said earlier, I don't really see many animals here, besides the occasional critter."
Cookie couldn't help how much she rambled, and once she saw Only rest her chin on her paw, she wondered if she was boring her to death. She supressed a whimper as she heard a question directed towards her. "Nice to meet you Only. That's a different name. I'm Cookie." She nodded her head, her tail wrapping around her hind legs once again as she sat there, looking at the wolf dog.

Schatzie68 by DesertRat2012, on Flickr ONLY “Some names are earned,” Only replied, trying not to think of the means in which she had earned hers. She looked at the little dog who had to sit up to meet her eye-to-eye, even as he laid her head down. Any observer would probably have found the scene amusing. “Cookie is a nice name.”“This is a nice place,” she observed. “I’ll remember it’s here, but I’ll try not to come too often.” She winked at the little dog. “That way, less other animals are likely to ‘stumble’ on to it too.”As much time as she spent on the go, she was finding it nice to take at least a short break and chat with Cookie. It had been a while since she had conversed with another canine, and she was enjoying this opportunity. “So when you are not here, where do you go? I tend to stay around Main Street in the city.” She did not want to reveal too much about herself, but she was enjoying her time with this little spunky dog.

Cookie nodded, trying to figure out what Only meant by some names were earned. Despite how much she wanted to ask and wanted to learn about it, she decided not too. She laughed upon hearing her name was nice. "Sometimes I think my master gave it to me because she was hungry. She was always hungry." She laughed a little more, sighing a little.
"I don't mind if you come here though. Thanks for the offer, but you don't seem bad. And I think it deserves a little more attention, since I don't come here often." Cookie smiled at Only, catching her wink in a side glance. She smiled wider, then she began pawing at her muzzle to knock the smile off her face.
"When I'm not here? Huh, I never gave it much thought... I just sort of go wherever my feet lead me. I sometimes like to rest, and sometimes I need to do something because I get bored, so I go wherever I go. I don't ever have a set destination except for when I'm coming here. I'll know when it's the perfect timing to stop here and rest. "The main street? I've probably seen you a few times, just didn't notice you." She closed her eyes, wondering if that sounded bad. "I don't mean that in a mean way or anything. I just can't see so well, or smell so great, so I miss a lot of things that happen."

Schatzie68 by DesertRat2012, on Flickr ONLY “You have my respect, Cookie,” Only said. “I cannot imagine trying to navigate the city with limited vision and sense of smell, especially at your stature.” She held her head to the side. She knew she needed to work on her communication skilld. “No offense meant.”“It is possible I have crossed your path as well, but did not realize it.” The wolf dog had to admit that it was unlikely that this cute, little, ball of fluff would have gotten much attention from her on one of her usual strolls in the city, as she did not appear to present a threat to her. The peaceful sound of the running water from the stream mingled with the songs of a couple birds who had landed in a branch overhead. Only peered up at them. If she had not eaten such a short time ago, she may have chased one down for food. But she did not especially like to eat birds; too many feathers. “How do you survive on your own?” She hoped that the question did not offend the small dog. But she was finding herself more and more fascinated by Cookie.

Cookie gave Only a small smile and nodded her head. "It's okay, I know there was no meant in offending me. Your voice told me so. I don't complain, it's alright. I get where I need to go, and I must be alive for a reason. Right?" She smiled a little wider, looking at Only.
"Hey, it's nice to meet you now. I like meeting others. I guess it's weird that I'm not so on edge, considering your height and mine. With your one paw, you could probably crush me. But I would hope you wouldn't, at least without a reason." Cookie looked down at Only's paws, making a note of how big they were. It was crazy, how little she was, and how big she was.
Listening to the birds, she got lost for a second. When she heard Only's voice again, she came back to reality and looked down slightly. "I'm sorry, I wasn't paying too much attention. I hope you didn't ask any question except for how I've survived on my own. I don't know how I have. Made friends with the right dogs I guess? I'm in a pack, and they take care of their own. So I know I'll be alright, no matter how far I venture away. If I ever needed someone, they'd be there to help me." She responded in a soft voice, before wondering if Only had a pack. "Are you running with anyone? Like a pack or you just a loner?" She asked, suppressing a yawn.

Schatzie68 by DesertRat2012, on Flickr ONLY Only felt a pang of bitterness as Cookie spoke about having a pack. “Sounds like you managed to get yourself with a good group of dogs,” she commented, maybe placing too much emphasis on the word dogs. She hoped Cookie had not noticed. This little dog would certainly benefit from the protection of larger canines. And maybe being a dog among dogs made the difference. All she knew of pack life was being a target for abuse, and was happy when the wolves had left and she could remain. Maybe a pack was a good idea. She just was not sure if she was ready to explore that option, at least just not yet. She would take small steps. Test the waters. “I was part of a pack once,” Only admitted. “They weren’t as ‘protective’ of me as yours is of you. Consider yourself very lucky, Cookie. This world can be very harsh.” She knew all too well how harsh. She shook her fur, as though trying to shake the dark mood that threatened to settle on her. She did not want to dwell on the subject too much. “But speaking of your pack, will there be wondering where you got off to?”
