Shop windows lay shattered and cars, doors still open, left standing in the streets. The sun was low in the sky and cast a medley of orange and pink hues across the scene. Hades cast his eyes upwards, towards the clouded sky and let his mind wander.
How strange it was for him that, suddenly, he had a pack on his hands. He'd always been a solitary dog, caring for none but himself. Then, one day a little group of, what Hades would call runts, approached him. Look at you, they said, we can tell you know your way around. We can see you're strong and powerful. We can see how well you're doing. Please, protect us and we will make you our King. We will obey your every command. Maybe it was arrogance that made him accept their proposition. Maybe it was the clockwork of his mind ticking away, after all, living in a group has it's advantages but oh, oh, leading that group had so many more. But maybe, just maybe, it was that little tingle in the very fiber of his being. The primal instincts of all canines, to form a pack, bring young into this world and carry on one's legacy were finally catching up on the beast. As much as he'd deny it to anyone who'd ask, Hades was similar to others in that way. He, too, craves a family, a home. Ah, but he'd laugh to himself, perhaps my mind has simply softened with age. So yes, he'd accepted. He'd take these dogs under his wing, he'd turn them into the ruthless beast he was. Some of them, he'd admit, showed potential. In his mind, he'd already picked favourites. Not that he'd ever let them know. Time will tell which dogs showed promise.
His new-found little family still played on his mind when his nose caught an interesting scent. It had been a while since he had eaten and without realizing, he was hungry. He cast his head towards the direction of the scent. A run-down and long abandoned bakery lay to his right. Yes, he knew that there are no such things as freshly baked bread or even leftovers in the bins outside but for the clever canine, one who knew that time had rusted the tins of food on the shelf and a dog like Hades had learned how to knock them off the shelf and apply pressure to the weakest point of rust and thus crack open the can. Today's meal consisted of a tin of baked beans. Although he had no conception of what this meal was or how it was made, he recognized it. Not-so fond memories of scavenging with his mother as a young pup came to mind. He's glad, for the most part, that he has left that life behind. It was a dark place which has left permanent scars on his mind. He'll admit, though, that it made him a stronger dog.
So engrossed was he with his meal that he didn't notice the other canine enter. His head snapped up in an instant, mouth still full and tongue exposed to lap at the red sauce at his lips. My god, he thought, what a sight I must look.

Deux, sniffed around. Her nose came up with a dotting of white snow, it was cold enough for the powder to have fallen on the not-so-abandoned city. She shook her head to rid herself of the cold stuff. The female narrowed her eyes, looking around. It was cold, and silent. Except for the occasional whipping of wind and maybe a plastic bag floating by like a tumbleweed, nothing. It was strange, usually around this part you would see at least one dog, but she didn't even see a glance. "Hm, weird." Deux was about the turn back when she caught a whiff and knew in a moment exactly why there were no dogs. Hades.
The light coloured dog grinned. She would play some games on the old dog, it never got old. She trotted quickly around. Once she spotted him she waited. She sat, ears erect until she saw the large white male. Twitching an ear, she followed him with her eyes until she saw him enter a small building. "Ahh, the old boy is scavenging. Deux shook her head. She heard something fall, a metallic sound. After that, a small crunch, followed by just audible lapping up of food. Deux wouldn't miss this for the world, catching Hades off guard, by god she could probably make him piss himself.
Deux got up, shook, and trotted swiftly over. Her paws left dainty prints in the snow. As she got closer she slowed, taking more careful steps. She slid into the building, some sort of foodplace for humans. She sniffed and then saw Hades, eating some rank food from a can. They may not have the luxury of choosing their meals but Deux was still picky as hell. Of course running a pack had its perks, she could get things other dogs couldn't. She now slid up, out of distance for the male to potentially bite her in his surprise. He looked up, clearly embarrassed.
"You would think with an entire pack of dogs you wouldn't need to scrounge around for yourself.

Of all the dogs in this city, it had to be her. It had to be the one dog he was actually trying to impress. What happened to the suave, charming monster? For some reason, that always flew out the window at full speed whenever Deux is in the picture.
He didn't know her quite as well as he wanted to just yet. What he knew about her is that she was a cocky bitch and Hades absolutely loved that about her. For all that, she had a strange way of calming his mind. Of making it so that all of the demons inside his head dissipated and all he could think about was right here, right now. But what was this? Was Hades getting too overly attached when, in realty, he barely even knew this dog? For gods sake, he'd only ever seen her in passing. Those sideways looks and little smiles giving all kinds of signals.
He'd never actually been involved with a female. He always told himself that he was far too busy plotting and scheming to have the time for women. But he had accomplices now. He had a Hand and a Master to do the scheming for him now and just a little bit of time to relax every now and then. Perhaps, he even had time to start a family, then? But he was getting ahead of himself. Before he realised it, he was staring. Jesus, Hades, pull yourself together.
And then there it was, the biting comment that for some stupid reason warmed his heart ever so slightly. He supposed he should try and scrape together some shred of dignity and respond. His head held high he put on the most charming voice he could. "Ah, my lady. What you say is correct. But where's the fun in that?" Oh gods, what a schmuck. It might as well have been a "hey baby, come here often?" sort of thing to say.
